J and I spent our teenage years exploring the craft of DJing together, playing underground hip-hop and D’n’B at school discos and friends’ parties amidst barrages of Rihanna requests. Finally, after many attempts in our teenage years, we’ve managed to record something together (despite being at different ends of the country). The mix encompasses Hip-Hop, Beats, Footwork, T**p, Jungle and D’n’B, and features an exclusive track from J’s ‘2Kings’ project – a collaboration with his brother-from-his-actual-mother. Mary Anne had previously worked with Hoya when she played at their Warehouse Project curation. We hooked up before her set to chat post-Radio 1 life, her contribution to Black Swan and Hoya Hoya. Matt and Phred’s Jazz Club saw another excellent booking in February with the arrival of ARIYA ASTROBEAT ARKESTRA to the stage – nine members filled up the stage and I haven’t seen the venue that full… well, ever. A lovely bunch of chaps and deserving of big things, the lads came together after working disparately on a number of projects in the Leeds/First Word fam. Awareness of their self titled album continues to grow since its release as they fill up venues everywhere.

The Ital Duke cut his teeth on the sounds of Reggae with Ska band The Frustrations back in Oxford, where he immersed himself in the heavy sounds of Jamaica's finest Dub and Reggae producers. The Duke moved to Sheffield in 2007 and started in radio with the 'Dub Revolution' show (SureRadio) which blasted out reggae, dub, ska and conspiracy theories as and when they were needed (frequently). Despite being flu-ridden and frankly knackered mate, Jimmy was more than happy to shoot the shit with Groovement - also along for the ride were Gordon G, who heads up the Banana Klan label with Roots Manuva.
