Groovement: Crowhead Nov 2009

<img src="http://groovementradio.podOmatic.com/mymedia/thumb/1114637/0x0_2307333.png" alt="itunes pic" /><br />BORN WITH TEETH, Crowhead's debut album for Aim's label ATIC records, has dropped recently and here's a smattering of tunes and commentary to go with it. Crowhead's previous Groovement podcast was one of the most well-received we'e done and he hasn't disappointed for the second. '92 rave styles meet classic hip hop meets chilled vibes, all sprinkled with treats from Crowhead's new LP and Bsides to the 12-inches that have been released so far.

Massive thanks to Crowhead for his time, and big shout to Unity Radio boss Greens for dropping in towards the end.

Groovement: Daedelus X Gaslamp Killer (Hoya Hoya takeover)

<img src="http://groovementradio.podOmatic.com/mymedia/thumb/1114637/0x0_2288429.jpg" alt="itunes pic" /><br />Well, well, well... a couple of weeks after joining us in the studio with Brackles, Daedelus returns to our humble Manchester studio with a special friend in tow in the form of the MotherFucking Gaslamp Killer.

Jonny Dub of Hoya Hoya kicks us off with some typical Hoya fatness before Daedelus digs out his UK purchases and spins us some scratchy vinyl. Gaslamp drops some ill and upfront shit from his iPhone while Illum Sphere gets a late train in to finish us off.

MONSTER of a show, and a direct result of Hoya KILLING it at the Warehouse Project the night before. The only way is up, gentlemen.

Groovement: Speech Debelle

<img src="http://groovementradio.podOmatic.com/mymedia/thumb/1114637/0x0_2298655.jpg" alt="itunes pic" /><br />I caught up with Speech Debelle a couple of weeks after her Mercury win. I was initially anticipating interview overload on her part but to her credit we had an enjoyable little chat about hip hop, education and Mcdonald's amongst other things.

She played Night & Day Cafe in Manchester following our natter, and certainly delivered the goods in terms of performance and audience interaction. Considering the Mercury win and small venue however, I was a bit gutted to see the place wasn't rammed - what does a hip hopper have to do to fill a place out, eh?

Groovement: Wah Wah 45s : We Wah Ten! hosted by Dom Servini

<img src="http://groovementradio.podOmatic.com/mymedia/thumb/1114637/0x0_2253379.jpg" alt="itunes pic" /><br />You know, I've got a very soft spot indeed for Wah Wah 45s. Been buying them for years in fact, in their little blue and white sleeves with a little contact number on the back and that naughty little logo. You just know that each piece of wax has been chosen specifically to convey a musical mesage, not cos it's some shit remix or the like. So big ups to the label that 'promises all the right records, but not necessarily in the right order'. Dom Servini & Simon Goss (with guidance from brother Chris) deliver twisted blue-eyed soul, future boogie, Hungarian funk, and Brit folk like you've never heard before... as the myspace says.

Here is a WONDERFUL podcast from Main Man Dom Servini to celebrate the tenth anniversary of Wah Wah and indeed its associated shinding at the Scala in London. Groovement is very proud to host this... kick back, dim the lights and swoon to the lusicous tones of Mr Dom Servini...

Thanks so much to Stephanie for being warm and welcoming despite limited rehearsal time with a great new backing band who rocked the Mint Lounge...
_____________

Big shout to promoter Pass The Feeling On for having the motivation and dedication to bring some real NY soul to Manchester. Check the blog at www.passthefeelingon.blogspot.com.

The podcast is topped and tailed by 'Jackson Avenue' and Stephanie's cover of Willie Mason's 'Oxygen' respectively, both from second long player TELL IT LIKE IT IS. Tracks playing under the interview are from debut MCKAY - track it down or find its AKA, TAKE ME OVER on iTunes.

The Ital Duke cut his teeth on the sounds of Reggae with Ska band The Frustrations back in Oxford, where he immersed himself in the heavy sounds of Jamaica's finest Dub and Reggae producers.

The Duke moved to Sheffield in 2007 and started in radio with the 'Dub Revolution' show (SureRadio) which blasted out reggae, dub, ska and conspiracy theories as and when they were needed (frequently).

He then began DJing under the title of 'The Ital Duke' around Sheffield and started the 'Ital Sounds' show (forgeradio.com), this time as himself - Ben Webster - in 2008, which serves up a hearty portion of Reggae, Dub and Ska with extra Dubstep, Hip-Hop, Soul and anything else Ital every Thursday evening.

Groovement hooked up with the Duke when he was spinning at one of the Colonel's legendary gigs in Sheffield, saw the fire in his eyes and got him on here! Enjoy...

Despite being flu-ridden and frankly knackered mate, Jimmy was more than happy to shoot the shit with Groovement - also along for the ride were Gordon G, who heads up the Banana Klan label with Roots Manuva. Gibbs, he of the fold-away keyboard, and DJ Mr Cosmo provided the remaining ambience. Enjoy, this Groovement is both informative and pretty funny.

Omas has played on the same bill as a load of heads (I first heard him on the same bill as Public Enemy) and spins all over the North West, representing both AT LARGE and ATRIAL PHONIKS - look out for this lot coming into the studio when Unity Radio returns with its FM licence!

Kicking off with a breaks mix, Omas then brings us a hip hop mix he put together for Groovement back in Dec 2007.

<itunes:summary>OMAS - Manchester beat digger, DJ and producer extraordinnaire.

Check all Omas' new beats at his constantly-updated myspace

Rockers Revolt is a record label set up by UK dub collective Pama Intl. Pama includes in its line up Sean Flowerdew, Finny and Lynval Golding (of The Specials), all of whom can be heard talking about the tour and label in this podcast.

Inspired by the great independent labels; Stax, Studio One, Stiff Records and a deep-rooted DIY philosophy. What started out as being the outlet for Pama Intl's own material, has grown into a burgeoning home for the finest soul-fueled reggae, ska, rocksteady, dub & roots artists from the UK and abroad.

In Summer 2008 Rockers Revolt upped sticks and took to the road for the REGGAE FOR THE PEOPLE tour including PAMA INTL, THE SLACKERS, THE PIETASTERS with MUNGO'S HI FI between bands.

Agent J chased up the REGGAE FOR THE PEOPLE tour over in Sheffield, UK and sat down with members of Pama, Mungos and the Slackers. Come join us for insights into the Specials reunion, Lynval's Duffy love, Pama's TROJAN experience and the world of an independent label.

We find a quiet corner in Manchester's music box and chat sci fi, Visioneers, legacies and podomatic.

PS to those that asked... he hasn't got started on Battlestar Galactica yet but has definitely heard good things.

Big shout to Decoy, Ryan Hunn and Jonny Dub for sorting the interview!
